About the Crescendo Project

In partnership with Colin Neighbourhood Partnership, Shankill Children’s Zone, and Queen's University Innovation Zones, the Ulster Orchestra is seeking experienced and passionate music tutors to join our flagship music education initiative. The project focuses on improving children's resilience, aspirations, emotional development, and musical skills—particularly in areas of social and economic disadvantage.

  • Weekly sessions in P1–P3 (general music) and P4–P7 (instrumental training)

  • Delivered across four Belfast schools

  • Flexible hours: 3–10 hours/week, school term time only (Oct 2025 – June 2026)

We are currently recruiting Peripatetic Tutors for the following instruments:

  • Violin / Viola

  • Brass


Job Details

  • Job Title: Peripatetic Music Tutor

  • Type: Worker status

  • Pay: £37.08 per hour

  • Reporting To: Head of Community Engagement and Grants, Deputy Production Manager, UO Animateur


✅ Person Specification

Essential Criteria

  • Degree or equivalent qualification in music/music education OR significant experience in instrumental/group tutoring

  • Ability to motivate children of varying abilities

  • Flexibility with working hours

  • Passionate about music education and pupil-focused teaching

  • Experience working with KS1–KS2 pupils (ages 7–11)

Desirable Criteria

  • Strong interpersonal/team communication skills

  • Experience leading/co-leading group music workshops

  • Understanding of Northern Ireland primary curriculum and social-emotional learning

Personal Attributes

  • Adaptable and collaborative team player

  • Positive and clear communicator

  • Enthusiastic, self-motivated, and organised

  • High standards and reliability


Safeguarding & Compliance

  • Must be available to teach weekly from October 2025 to June 2026

  • Subject to Access NI background checks

  • Must comply with Ulster Orchestra's Safeguarding, Health & Safety, and other policies
