United Musicians Association Chamber & Ensemble Certification


1. Introduction

The UMA Chamber & Ensemble Music Proficiency Certification is designed to assess musicians performing in small to medium-sized groups, focusing on ensemble coordination, musical communication, and stylistic cohesion.

This certification applies to all instrumental combinations—duos, trios, quartets, quintets, and larger ensembles—across classical and contemporary chamber repertoire. Exams are video-based and evaluated by international UMA ensemble specialists.

Certification levels range from Grade 1 to Grade 9, with a Performance Diploma offered for professional-level ensemble artistry.


2. Eligible Ensemble Types

  • String Quartet / Trio / Quintet

  • Piano Trio / Wind Quintet

  • Vocal Ensembles (with or without instruments)

  • Mixed Instrumental Groups (e.g., violin + flute + piano)

  • Percussion / Brass / Woodwind Ensembles

  • Contemporary ensemble formats (with approval)

Note: Solo performances are not eligible. Candidates must participate as part of a real ensemble.


3. General Requirements

4. Repertoire Requirements

🎼 Grades 1–5

  • Piece Count: 1 ensemble work

  • Focus: Basic coordination, rhythmic unity, expressive phrasing

  • Examples: Easy duets or trios from Classical and Romantic periods (e.g., Haydn, Diabelli, Kuhlau)

🎼 Grades 6–9

  • Piece Count: 2 contrasting works

  • Focus: Balance, independence of voices, articulation, stylistic contrast

  • Examples: String quartets, piano trios, wind quintets, 20th-century works with extended techniques

  • Ravel: Introduction & Allegro (for harp, flute, clarinet, and string quartet)

  • Shostakovich: String Quartet No. 8

  • Poulenc: Sextet for Piano and Winds

  • Contemporary ensembles (e.g., Steve Reich’s "Different Trains")


5. Assessment Criteria

6. Video Submission Guidelines

  • Orientation: Landscape format

  • Framing: All performers must be clearly visible throughout the video

  • Recording: Live group performance only; no isolated tracks or overdubbing

  • Environment: Quiet, well-lit rehearsal or concert space preferred

  • File Naming: “GroupName_GradeLevel” (e.g., TrioAurora_Grade8)
